Formation of Subsidence Resulting From Mining Activities and Its Effects on Urbanization

Zonguldak and its near surrounding have been constituted the centre of hard coal basin where mining activities have been carried out for 160 years. In the region where more than 300 thousand people live, mining activities have affected every area of life and comprised the main economical activity in this region. Subsidence caused by mining activities and the enforcement of Coal Basin Region Regulation, locally known as Havza-i Fahmiye implementation, and the planning, land use and urbanization problems due to this regulation are the issues special to this hard coal region. The effects of surface deformations could go on even post production in a decreasing manner in and around the production area. This formation also named as residual subsidence can cause a great number of natural and cultural problems. It is a curious subject whether the buildings constructed on the surface in question and the residual subsidence could create damages and problems in future. Therefore, it is concluded that investigations of advance nature should be conducted to determine these effects in the region. In this study existing subsidence problems are investigated and given some suggestions for solving these problems.
