Seed and germination characters of some Quercus libani olivier provenances in Turkey

The aims of this study were to determine the effects of stratification and storage on germination of Q. libani seeds, and to ascertain the effect of pericarp removal on Q. libani seeds. Germination of Q. libani acorns collected from two sites in November 1999 was measured after various periods of stratification. To find the influences of pericarp removal, seed was collected from a different site in November 2000. Germination of these acorns with pericarps removed or intact was measured after various periods of stratification. It was found that Quercus libani seeds exhibit dormancy that may be broken by stratification and modified by pericarp removal. No significant correlation was found between seed weight and germination characteristics, but this study based on a limited number of provenances. Although germination parameters showed a decrease after 16 months storage in moist sand and polyethylene bag, germination was still high.
