Numerical investigation of buoyancy driven heat transfer in finite horizontal parallel plates

Effects of plate separation, plate length and temperature difference on free convection between asymmetrically heated horizontal parallel plates has been investigated numerically. The upper plate is adiabatic, the lower isothermally heated plate is facing upwards. The three-dimensional laminar numerical simulations are obtained by solving the full elliptic governing equations using a finite volume based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. Relevant dimensionless numbers were used for comparisons of computational results with data from the literature. It was observed that the overall heat transfer rate is influenced by plate spacing, plate length and temperature difference. Heat transfer enhancement is achieved for increased values of all the above parameters.
