Electromagnetic compatibility-electrostatic discharge tests for a utomotive

The international automotive ESD standard (ISO 10605: 2008) has significant differences from thecommercial ESD testing standard (IEC 61000‑ 4 ‑ 2). Differences include the Human Bo dy Model(HBM) used to simulate a person s electrical network and the utilization of significantly higherdischarge voltages, up to ±25kV air discharge. This article aims to examine the differences andconsider why they exist. The test methods will be explained and the similarities between theautomotive and commercial product standards also highlighted. A discussion will also be forwardedon why other non‑ automotive products might be improved if they were designed to meet theautomotive ESD standard and why this standard might be more appropriate in some non‑ automotivesituations than IEC 61000‑ 4‑ 2.
