SOCIOPRAGMATIC FAILURES IN USING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

IN SOCIOLINGUISTICS, FAILURES IN USING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE ARE GROUPED INTO TWO DIFFERENT CATEGORIES WHICH ARE PRAGMALINGUISTIC FAILURE AND SOCIOPRAGMATIC FAILURE CAUSED BY INSUFFICIENT OR INCORRECT LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE. LEARNING THE RELEVANT SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ASPECTS OF SOCIOPRAGMATIC USAGES IS A MUST TO ACHIEVE LANGUAGE COMPETENCY AND INTELLIGIBILITY. IN THIS STUDY, IT IS AIMED TO REVIEW THE RELATED AREAS OF SOCIOPRAGMATICS THAT ARE SPEECH-ACTS AND VOCABULARY SELECTION IN DETAIL. IT IS TARGETED TO PRESENT THE LITERATURE REVIEW BY EXEMPLIFYING AND SUPPORTING WITH QUALITATIVE DATA RECEIVED FROM NEWLY GRADUATE ENGLISH TEACHERS' EXPERIENCES OF LANGUAGE USE. IN THE LIGHT OF RELATED LITERATURE AND COLLECTED DATA, SOME SUGGESTIONS ON THE CURRICULUM OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING PROGRAMME IN USE SINCE 2006-2007 ACADEMIC YEAR WILL BE PROPOSED IN THE CONCLUSION PART.
