Condorcet’s analysis of the development process of religion

In this article I am going to discuss Marquis de Condorcet’s (1743–1794) definition of religion and his approach to the historical development of religion on the basis of his work, Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind. Condorcet lived in the later period of the French Enlightenment. His discussions of religion deserves to be carefully examined given the fact that he is considered to be the last of the French Encyclopedists and that his work is given less attention than works of many other Enlightenment thinkers.
