Application of Billings Ovulation Method: A Natural Family Planning Method

Objective: The present study was conducted toapply the Billings Ovulation Method on womenwho wanted to use the method either to becomepregnant or as contraception, and to evaluate theresults. Method: The study, which was based on multipurpose descriptive characteristics, was alongitudinal study including analyzing points.The study population consisted of 31 individualswanting to learn about and use the method, out of6185 individuals who applied to the familyplanning FP unit for FP consultation at auniversity hospital in a province in the Marmararegion within two years during which the studywas conducted. The women were allowed to usethe method after they were provided consultationon the method and following minimum threefollow-up consultations. The data were collectedusing the "Personal Information Form", "FertilityInformation Assessment Form" and "DischargeObservation Schedule." In the analysis of the data,percentage and "t" test were used. Approval fromthe institution and written consent from thewomen were obtained for the study.Results: Of the women, 54.4% were between 30and 34 years of age, 77.4% received educationfor ?12 years, and 74.2% were working. Twentytwo women wanted to use the method forcontraception, while nine wanted it to become pregnant. Two of nine women who wanted to use the method to become pregnant were successful, two withdrew from the study, and five were sent to the infertility polyclinics as they were unable to become pregnant even if they tried it for at least three cycles. Nineteen women successfully used the method to prevent pregnancy. Seventeen of them were still using the method two years after the study was completed.
