Importance of zinc in soils for living organisms and determination of zinc bioavailability

Zinc is a required element for plants, animals as well as humans. It usually in low concentrations in soil. However, anthropogenic sources can increase soil zinc to a level toxic to plants. Metal toxicity is related to bioavailability rather than the total concentration of metal in soil. The assessment of metal bioavaibility is difficult because bioavaibility is influenced by many soil properties. The most common parameters used to evaluate zinc phytotoxicity are yield decreases, plant zinc concentrations, iron-induced chlorosis, Ca:Zn ratios in plant tissue, batch extractions and diffuse gradient in thin films (DGT).
