Are physicians ready for electronic medical records? A survey of two hospitals in Zonguldak

The use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in healthcare organizations will cause substantial changes in the way physicians provide patient care. The purposes of this study are to investigate specific attitudes or factors that could influence successful implementation of EMR, to reveal the level of perceived usefulness of the EMR byphysicians working at Zonguldak State Hospital and Zonguldak Social Insurance Institute Region Hospital where EMR is not in use, and to reveal factors affecting perceived usefulness. The questionnaire used in this study as a data gathering tool was based on the questionnaire used in the study of assessment of factors that promote successful EMR implementation by the Center for Health Policy Research of the Pennsylvania State University. The population of this study was composed of all physicians working at the two hospitals. Eighty-four percent of the physicians (102 physicians) replied the questionnaire. At the end of this study, it was found that physicians perceived EMR positively and their levels of computer anxiety were low. There was a negative correlation between perceived usefulness of EMR and computer anxiety. There was a positive correlation between perceived usefulness of EMR and training in the use of computers "through self study. "
