Sulfate resistance of mortars produced with granulated blast furnace and steel slag additive cements

Granulated Blast Furnace (GBFS) and Steel Slag (SS) is waste materials that are released from iron and steel works. In addition to that their fields of recycling are limited, their storage are problematic. In this study, Portland cement with GBFS and SS additives were produced. It was also intended to determine the optimum mixture by mixing different ratios of GFBS and SS, first separately, then together. Finally, the cement, which was mixed with a ratio of 70% GBFS – 30% SS, was grinded with different fineness and the effect of fineness on sulfate resistance was investigated. Mortar specimens of the produced cements were cured in water and sulfate, and then compressive strengths of both mortars was compared. As a result, sulfate resistances of cements with GBFS and SS additives were found to be higher than those of the cements with no additives. It was also observed that slag mixture ratios and fineness had no effect on the sulfate resistance.
