Anaerobic treatability of propylene glycol in single-phase and two-phase system

Two-phase anaerobic treatment is considered to be more advantageous than a single- phase process, because it is more stable, is more resistant to inhibitory conditions, has a higher treatment efficiency and less total reactor volume is required. The objective of this study was to determine and compare applicable organic loading rates of single and two-phase anaerobic completely mixed systems in treating propylene glycol, which has a high level of chemical and biological oxygen demand. Sludge retention time was chosen as 20 days for both systems. Under studied conditions, the two-phase system achieved a higher sustained organic loading rate and higher methane production rate than the single-phase system.
