Influence of the static, salty, acidic hydrous environments on the capillarity potential of the porously building stone
One of the main factors that causes weathering of the natural building stones is the presence of water. Capillary water is responsible for allowing the water to enter in the building stones. This absorption mechanism depends mainly on the pore dimension and the geometry of the porosity system. In this research, a series of characterization studies were carried out on the andesite, Ayazini and Seydiler tuffs which are used as building stones in Afyonkarahisar area. Petrographic-mineralogical (polarized microscope, XRD, SEM), chemical, pore size distribution and physico-mechanical properties of the subject rocks have been determined. Experimental studies have been carried out to determine the water absorption properties of the rocks in the static, salty and acidic environments. As a result of these experiments, capillary water absorption potentials have been found to be in; between 5.83 and 6.88 kg/m2s0.5 for the andesite, between 21.18 and 22.46 kg/m2s0.5 for the Ayazini tuffs and between 7.05 and 9.30 kg/m2s0.5 for the Seydiler tuffs. The maximum capillary water uptake value was measured in high acidic (pH 3) water. Since the water absorption capacity of these building stones are greater than 3.0 kg/m2s0.5, they are classified as “stones that have strong water absorption”.
