Kaşgar şehri Doğu Türkistan\'ın en önemli merkezlerinden biridir. Halkının büyük çoğunluğu ticaret, sanat ve ziraatla uğraşmaktadır. Kaşgar eski ipek yolunun da önemli bir merkezidir. Tarih boyunca Kaşgar, Çin ile Karluk, Uygur, Kırgız ve Karahanlı Türk boyları tarafından yönetilmiştir. Din olarak Buda, Hıristiyanlık ve nihayet 8. yüzyılda da İslamiyet hakim olmaya başlamıştır. Zengin tarihi geçmişi ile de Kaşgar, en eski ve ebedî Türk yurtlarından birisidir. 19. yüzyıla kadar Osmanlı-Kaşgar münasebetleri hakkında ciddi bir teşebbüse rastlanmamaktadır. Bunun sebebi ise coğrafi faktörlerin önemli rol oynamasıdır. Bu tarihlerde münasebetlerin kurulmasının sebebi ise, gelişen teknoloji ile kısmen de olsa coğrafi engellerin aşılmış olmasıdır. With its diversified historical heritage Kasghar is one of the oldest and eternal parts of the Turkish culture. There was not a serious attempt to establish any relations between Kasghar and Ottomans till 19th century. Geographic factors played an important role in this situation. The fact that the relations established after that date was due to partial elimination of the geographic barriers as a result of technological achievements.
