Ultrastructural changes in thyroid follicular cells of molerat (Spalax leucodon) exposed to ultraviolet light

The effects of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the follicular cells of thyroid glands of molerats (Spalax leucodon) have been investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Molerats, approximately body weight of 150-200 g were used in experiments. The animals were exposed to UV radiation of 52, 112, 168-and 224 hours (eight hours in a day). Samples of thyroid glands were obtained from each animal and made of preparation for TEM. Vacuolation in the cytoplasm, increases in the number of lysosomes, dilatation and vesiculation of endoplasmic reticulum, loss of microvilli have been in the follicle cells ofbthyroid glands obtained from molerats depending on doses and experimantal periods.
