LEVELS OF HALOGENATED PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS IN THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT OF A UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

Concentration of Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected in indoor dust of four different microenvironments (laboratories and classrooms in environmental and mechatronics engineering departments, classrooms in the faculty of law and library) in a university campus. The mean concentrations of Σ14PBDEs and Σ15PCBs in 2 chemical laboratories, 2 computer laboratories, 5 classrooms, 2 saloons of library were 88.47, 613.71, 281.9 and 152.79 ng g-1, and 82.81, 205.62, 27.64 and 67.94 ng g-1 for PBDEs and PCBs, respectively. BDE 209 was the most dominated congener with a mean value of 173.56 ng g-1, followed by BDE 153 (mean:15.83 ng g-1) and BDE-183 (mean:15.30 ng g-1). The elevated concentrations of PBDEs and PCBs measured in computer laboratory indicated that the main sources of these congeners could be microprocessor packaging in computers, printed circuit boards and older computers cabinet treated with these pollutants. While the conducted chemical experiments and existince of chemicals stored in the chemical laboratory could be the source of PCBs, however, it is thought that they may not affect the levels of measured PBDEs in environmental laboratory. The PBDEs/PCBs >1 indicated that the current buildings were constructed after the use of PCB ban
