Poplar wood liquefaction using sodium carbonate catalyst in the presence of aqueous formic acid

In this study, the liquefaction of poplar wood in the presence aqueous formic acid (HCOOH) was investigated by considering the temperature and the amount of the catalayst (Na2CO3) as the basic parameters. In the experiments undertaken to elucidate the effect of the amount of the catalyst (Na2CO3) at 250°C and for 2 hour liquefaction duration time, oil yields did not increase with further increase in the amount of catalyst, whereas the amount of solid residue was found to be more less than without catalyst. In the experiments carried out under different temperatures (220, 250, 270 and 300 °C), oil yields and the amount of gas formed during the liquefaction reaction increased with further increase in reaction temperature; whereas the amount of solid resude decreased steadily with temperature.
