Comparative Advantage and Competitiveness Indicators of Turkish Manufacturing Industries

Traditional and new theories were defended on obtaining the comparative ad- vantage and competitiveness in international trade. Traditional theories based trade forms on factor endowment while new theories based on intra-industry tra- de that includes economies of scale and product differentiation. The differences of the trade forms determine the main actors that play a role in obtaining com- parative advantages. In this study it is examined that in which sectors of Turkey have comparative advantages after the process of liberalization and following the Customs Union in which direction of comparative advantages are develo- ped over time. To this end, during the period 1996-2013 are calculated compa- rative advantage of Turkey’s trade with the world by using the Balassa, Transfor- med Revealed Comparative Advantage and Vollrath indicators of the Turkish ma- nufacturing industry. Results have revealed that the comparative advantages of Turkey is labor-intensive, but there is a conversion towards from labor-intensive specialization than capital-intensive specialization in the long run.
