To read being and time as abackground of Heidegger ' s Metaphysic and Nihilism dispute

In this article, I explore the background of later Heidegger's influential meditations on metaphysics and nihilism, and argue that many notions of Being and Time, such as fallenness, inauthenticity, forgetfullness of Being, finitude, nothingness, theoretical attitude, easily provide such a background. Nihilism is the fundamental understanding of Being which distinguishes and determines Western history and tradition as a whole in which Being as such is forgotten, and forgotten Being, as a consequence, has withdrawn from human life, that is, in Heidegger's words, abandoned beings. Such understanding of Being which has dominated the Western tradition Heidegger calls metaphysics. Metaphysics arises not only from an oblivion about Being as such but also from a failure to face Nothing as essentially belonging to our existence and Being itself alike. Hence Being and Time, in crucial ways, prepares Heidegger's critique of metaphysics.
