Felsefe tarihini dönemlere ayıracak olursak, öznellik dönemini Descartes’la başlatabiliriz. Hegel, Husserl ve Heidegger bu konuda aynı düşünceyi paylaşırlar. Descartes’ın cogitaya dayalı öznesi sonludur, Tanrı’yı garanti olarak alır, ayrıca doğanın hâkimi olmak ister. Leibniz, Spinoza ve Malebranche bu özne anlayışını genişletirler ama Rousseau felsefeye dönüşüm içerisindeki çelişkili özneyi getirir. Çağdaşlık bu çelişkileri yaşama ve benimseme deneyimidir.

It is indeniable that if we divide the history of the philosophy in periods, the period of the subjectivity begins with Descartes, as Hegel, Husserl and Heidegger attest it in their writings. The subjectivity of the cartesian cogito is finite, has God namely the infinite as grant and wants to possess the nature. Leibniz, Spinoza and Malebranche follow Descartes by adding some supplementary thesis but Rousseau introduces the concept of reflexivity, which exposes the subject to a sum of contradictions.
