Canine Babesiosis

Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the protozoal parasites Babesia gibsoni and Babesia canis. These parasites infect the red blood cells of dogs and typically cause hemolytic anemia. B.canis belongs to large babesias and is classified in three subspecies B.canis canis, B.canis rossi and B.canis vogeli. Although they share a similar morphology, they have different vector specificity (Dermacentor reticulatus, Haemaphysalis laechi and Rhipicephalus sanguineus respectively), geographical distribution, antigenicity and pathogenicity to dogs. Infection with B.gibsoni generally results in more severe clinical manifestations than infection with B.canis, and may cause multiple organ dysfunctions. In recent years molecular studies it was found small and large babesias in dogs are more than adopted.
