İlk çağlardan itibaren Mısır’ın önemli limanları arasında yer alan ve yüzyıllar boyunca özellikle de İslam hâkimiyeti altında iken sık sık saldırıya uğrayan Dimyat, 1000’li yıllardan sonra bölgede kalıcı olmak ve hâkimiyet kurmak isteyen Müslümanlar ile Haçlıların mücadele sahası olmuştur. 1218 yılında Dimyat önlerine gelen V. Haçlı Seferi ordularının işini şehirde meydana gelen salgın hastalık kolaylaştırmış ve Haçlılar bu suretle zayıf düşen Müslümanların ellerinden Dimyat’ı alabilmişlerdir.

Damietta has always been regarded as one of the most important ports of Egypt since ancient times. It, throughout centuries, has been attacked many times, particularly under the control of Muslims. As Muslims and Crusaders have aimed to settle the region permanently and to gain control over it, Dimyat, has been a conflict area between these two historical rivals since 1000. In 1218, a contagious disease that broke out in the city facilitated the work of V. Crusader army which came before Damietta and the Crusaders, in this way, were able to capture Damietta from Muslims who had fallen into a decline
