Determination of glycoconjugates in esophagus, proventriculus and gizzard mucosa of crow (Corvus corone) by lectin histochemistry

In this study, lectins of Triticum vulgare (WGA), Bandeiraea simplicifolia (BSA I-B4), Arachis hypogaea (PNA) and Ulex europaeus (UEA I) were used to determine the glycoconjugates in the esophagus, proventriculus and gizzard mucosa of crow (Corvus corone). As a result of applications the density of glycoconjugate in the mucosa of esophagus and stomach (proventriculus and gizzard) was found to differ significantly. The α-D-galactosyl, N-acetyl-α-D-galactosaminyl content of squamous cell layer of esophagus epithelium, and β-Galactoz, N-acetylgalactosamine content of the esophageal glands were found to be intense. It was determined that the α-D-galactosyl, N-acetyl-α-D-galactosaminyl were included as very intense in the epithelium and simple glands and as intense in compound glands in proventriculus. It was noted that the compound glands also included the α-L-Fucose in small amounts. The α-L-Fucose was slightly in some gland cells of gizzard. It was detected that N-acetyl-β-D glucosamine, N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid), α-D-galactosyl, N-acetyl-α-D-galactosaminyl contents were more intense than the other glycoconjugates in the epithelial and gland cells of both proventriculus and gizzard.
