A SPREADING ADDICTION AMONG YOUNG GENERATION: AN EXAMINATION OF SMARTPHONE ADDICTION ACCORDING TO GENDER, ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND MOBILE GAME PLAYING VARIABLES

This study aims to investigate smartphone addiction levels of young generation with respect to gender, mobile gaming, and academic achievement levels. The participants are university students (n = 301). Data were collected via the Turkish-adapted version of the “Smartphone Addiction Scale”. Independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were administered for data analysis. In terms of the effect of gender, findings indicated significant difference at the level of smartphone addiction of participants. However, mobile gaming and the duration of mobile gaming were at a higher level. In terms of academic achievement, results demonstrated that the participants with low levels of academic achievement have a higher risk of smartphone addiction than those with high academic achievement. Finally, in the survey, it was found that students use their smartphones mostly in bed before going to bed at night, and they spend time in social network sites, making calls, communicating via internet, messaging, listening to music and watching videos.
