[A research study on freshman students’ higher education integration levels]
During their higher education years, students may encounter various stressful and challenging situations that may help them to develop problem-solving skills and behaviors. Thus, life in higher education constitutes a transition period during which students take on different forms of challenges and difficulties. In the course of this transition period students may come up with new beliefs and ideas that can totally differ from their former perspectives (Tinto, 1975, 1988; Gerdes & Mallinckrodt, 1994; Tuna, 2003; Briggs, Clark & Hall, 2012). While this higher education adaptation is important in terms of academic achievement, skill improvement, and developing new habits, it is also related to students’ individual happiness and psychological well-being (Karahan, Sardoğan, Özkamalı & Dicle, 2005a). On the other hand, higher education integration is a determining factor in student drop-out or educational persistence rates (Spady, 1970; Tinto, 1975, 1993, 1997; Bean, 1980, 1983; Terenzini, Lorang & Pascarella, 1981; Woosley & Miller, 2009). Research shows that the first year of higher education in particular is the most challenging period for student integration (Terenzini & Pascarella, 1977; Alpan, 1992; Wang, Chen, Zhao & Xu, 2006; Sevinç, 2010; Mercan & Yıldız, 2011). In this study, students’ higher education integration was examined based on Tinto’s (1975) model and Pascarella and Terenzini’s (1980) scale development procedures. In this context, students’ academic integration, social integration, peer group relations, daily interactions with instructors, and organizational attachment were examined. Thus, this study aims to examine freshmen students’ higher education integration by considering different variables.
