TO EXAMINE THE IMPACT OF THE PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION METHODS ON ANXIETY LEVELS AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN DIALYSIS PATIENTS.

This study has been planned as an experimental research in order to determine the impact of a progressive relaxation training on anxiety levels and quality of life in dialysis patients. Fourty six patients who had been treated with dialysis in the Dialysis Unit Ege University Faculty of Medicine between 05 February-05 August 2001 composed the sampling of study. The data was collected by means of a questionnaire. Patients Recognition Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Quality of Life Index for dialysis patients were used to collect the necessary data. All of forms were applied to all patients prior to progressive relaxation training. Then, progressive relaxation training were given to the all patients by investigator. As training materials; a Relaxation Training Hand Book which written by investigetors and Cassette were used. Six weeks after, progressive relaxation training, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Quality of Life Index were reapplied to all patients. As a result of this research; before progressive relaxation training, the mean score for State Anxiety was found as 43.41; mean score after progressive relaxation training State Anxiety was found as 28.98. Before progressive relaxation training, trait anxiety mean score was found as 43.63 mean score after progressive relaxation training trait anxiety was found as 31.09. When the total quality of life score was examined; it was found as 28.65 before progressive relaxation training, and it was found as 29.61 after progressive relaxation training. The result of the study imposed that; progressive relaxation training for dialysis patients decreased State-Trait Anxiety levels and has a positive impact on the quality of life
