The predictive value of apolipoprotein A-l, apolipoprotein B and serum lipid levels were assessed in 121 patients with angiocardiographic evidence of coronary artery disease compared to 47 normal, control subjects. There was no significant difference in apolipoprotein A-l levels of patients (95+53 mgldl) compared to the control group (95+42 mgldl, p>0.05). The levels of apolipoprotein B in single vessel disease (111+51 mgldl) and two vessel disease (118+54 mgldl) were significantly elevated compared to the control group (87+44 mgldl). Apolipoprotein B levels in three vessel disease 107+51 mg+dl) were not significantly different compared to the control group (p>0.05). In conclusion, apolipoprotein B levels were concluded to be significantly elevated in left anterior descending coronary artery disease (p<0.05). The ratio of apolipoprotein B to apolipoprotein A-l was signficantly elevated (1.69±0.8)compared to the control group (1.04+O.6) im only patients with right coronary\ artery disease. The predictive value of apolipoproteins in the assessment of the extent of the disease remains inconclusive besides other conventional tests such as the measurement of lipid levels and lipoprotein electrophoresis.
