THE ENVIRONMENTAL KUZNETS CURVE HYPOTHESIS: COINTEGRATION AND CAUSALITY ANALYSIS FOR TURKEY

ABSTARCT: The aim of study examines the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve EKC hypothesis in Turkey between the years of 1960 and 2010. The relationship among variables were researched by ARDL bound test and Granger causality analysis. As the result of analysis it is stated that the EKC hypothesis is valid for Turkey and especially energy consumption EC , financial development FD and openness OP have an increasing effect on CO2 emission. As a result of causality test, unidirectional causality from FD to CO emission, EC and EG have been found in short term. Findings which confirm the feed-back hypothesis between CO2 emission and EC, CO2 emisson and EG, CO2 emission and FD variables have been obtained in long term
