The Role of the Woman in Amish Family and the Effect of the Religion in the Determining this Role

Amish people are one of the Anabaptist groups that arised during the European reformist movements in XVI. century. They immigrated to America due to the oppression of the church in the following years. Family is a most cherished concept in this Christian group with distinct life styles, who are known for their disregard for the technology. In Amish society, woman holds a key position in the family and has strict religious regulations regarding the lifestyle. Because of these regulations, it is nearly impossible to make a distinction between the “sacred” and “secular” in the woman’s life. Not only with her ancient-looking appearance, but also with her distinct point of view over life and daily practice, the Amish woman is pretty much distinguishable from the modern American woman.
