Optimization of water use from Beyşehir Lake depending on climate data
This study is aimed to develop an optimization model to obtain optimum management of water use strategies of Beyşehir Lake depending on climate data and size of irrigated fields from the lake. Beyşehir Lake is one of the most important and largest freshwater lake of Turkey. Therefore it has to be protected and managed sustainably to leave the lake’s precious water resources to future generations as healthy and as sufficient as possible. The main problems of the lake are related with the water quality and quantity, decreasing precipitations and increasing water withdrawal for irrigation, decreasing the bio-diversity in the lake, and disagreement among various management authorities responsible from the lake. Therefore the main issue for the lake management is decide about minimum lake level to be set for lake management policies depending on climatologic conditions. Water surface elevation of the lake is exposed to fluctuations due to unpredictable amount of excessive withdrawals for irrigation and climate conditions. How much of this variations in the lake levels are caused by withdrawals, and how much of them are caused by climate conditions is the subject of discussion among lake management authorities. This ambiguity is to be clarified by this optimization study which models the lake levels subject to climate conditions and irrigation water demand. Using this model, it is aimed to forecast the lake levels as a function of climate change scenarios, water loss from the lake due to evapotranspiration, water loss due to seepage from lake bottom, and crop water requirement in irrigated fields that receives water from the lake with pumpage or with gravitational flow. The concept of optimization model of water use from the lake refers to determination of minimum allowable water surface elevation of lake management by using the current and/or historical records precipitation, evaporation and groundwater elevation data at the vicinity of the lake. Optimization model is developed by using GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System) software. Daily evapotranspiration is calculated by using PenmanMonteith method which is suggested by FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization). Cropwater requirement is calculated by Blaney-Criddle method which is widely used by agricultural engineers. Groundwater levels are obtained from the regional groundwater flow model of the lake which was generated with MODFLOW software.
