Periradicular radiographic assessment of root canal treatments in diabetic and non-diabetic indivuduals

Root canal treatments were completed on patients having diabetes mellitus and non-diabetic patients and periapical radiolucencies were recorded after eighteen months following treatment. Upper incisors of 25 patients (12 patients having Type 1 and 13 patients having type 2) having diabetes mellitus and 25 non-diabetic patients were treated in conventional filing and obturation techniques. The control group was composed of non-diabetic and the experiment group was composed of diabetic patients. Patients were recalled during eighteen months for three times and records were taken. At the end of follow-up, teeth having periapical radiolucencies were recorded according to the groups. Patients with diabetes mellitus had more radiolucencies in the periapical region and this was found statistically significant (p<0,05). The probability of developing periapical lesions after root canal treatments in patients having Type 2 diabetes mellitus is more than its incidence in non-diabetic patients.
