Dechroming Optimisation of Chrome Tanned Leather Waste As Potential Poultry Feed Additives: Waste to Resources Approach

Moving towards zero waste required that the industıy adopts circular economy. There is need to drive circular economyapproach where all resources are reclaimed and reused if possible; waste is kept to an absolute minimum. Resourcerecovery for the leather industry waste will give financial and economic benefits. This research explores the potentialutilisation of tannery solid waste as poultry feed additive. Dechroming rate can be controlled to produce final productwith low level of chromium satisfying the requirements for poultry feed. Enzymatic treatment was used to obtain proteinconcentrates after thermal treatment. The hydrothermal stability and fibre structure of samples were analysed by differentialscanning calorimeter (DSC) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA peaksrevealed the chromium content and relative content of each element. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)was used to compare the amino acid composition with wheat and soya bean meal that is conventionally used in poultryfeed. Proximate analyses and other essential inorganic elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma opticalemission spectrometers (lCP-OES) and showed that levels of the metal were within the limit to be used in feed additives. The molecular weight distribution of the protein concentrates by sodium dodecyl-polyacryamide gel electrophoresis (SDSPAGE)indicated
