Influence of aggregate gradation on the cement quantity

In this study, the influence of the change in the aggregate gradation on the amount of cement used in a unit volume of concrete was investigated for a given strength and workability. Concrete mix proportions was designed to have a constant strength and workability using absolute volume method. Trial mix was made and if necessary corrections took place in the mix proportions to provide the given workability and strength. With the corrected mix proportions, concrete cube and cylinder specimens were prepared. These specimens were de-moulded after a day and then they were-euced in water with 23 C degree of temperature until the specimens were tested. The compressive strength and the modulus of rupture of these specimens were measured at 28 days of age. The results obtained from the laboratory investigation were compared. Comparison showed that the finer aggregate gradation resulted with the need of more cement as high as 35%.
