Periodontal Disease in Children With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Objective: To evaluate periodontal status of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus T1DM and to determine the factors which cause periodontal disease PD .Material and Methods: Eighty-eight children with T1DM were studied. Mean age of the patients was 12.3±3.4 yrs. control group included ninety-nine healthy children aged 11.02±3.3 yrs. Metabolic control was assessed by mean HbA1C level of the preceding year. All patients and controls were asked how often they brushed their teeth. Oral hygiene was examined with plaque index PI and periodontal tissues with gingival index GI and probable periodontal pocket PPP .Results: Mean PI and GI values of the diabetics were significantly lower than the controls. Nearly half of the diabetics and only one fourth of the controls were brushing their teeth regularly. Daily tooth brushing frequency was negatively correlated with PI and GI values in both diabetic patients r=-0.34, p=0.036; r=-0.37, p=0.027 respectively and controls r=-0.28, p=0.005; r=-0.26, p=0.01 respectively . On the other hand, the patients with T1DM who brushed their teeth once a day or more have significantly lower PI and GI values p=0.001 than those of the controls who have similar brushing frequency. PI and GI values of the patients having
