The importance of nursing approach in the Initiation of a positive relationship between mothers and their premature infants

This is an experimental study planned to determine the importance of the nursing approach to the initation of the relationship between the mother and her healthy premature infant. Methods: This study was carried out with thirty premature infants’ mothers in a six month period, in the newborn units of three hospitals in Antalya. Data was collected using “a survey form” and “the mother-infant relationship observation form”. The data was evaluated using the percentage, mean, chi square, and t-tests. Results: 40 % of the mothers were between 18-24 years of age, 76.6 % had an elementary school education. 56.7% of the infants were male, 53.4% of the infants were between 24-31 gestastional week of age, 56.7% of the infants weighed more than 2000 grams, the rest were between 1500-2000 grams. Mothers’ observation scores were 9.064±4.78 before the education, 22.60±7.10 after the education and the difference between the two was found to be statistically highly significant to an advanced degree (t:16.5, p<0.001). Conclusion: Neonatal nurses have a unique position in the initiation and maintenance of a positive relationship between mothers and their premature infants.
