The Vomer Bone Pattern Variations in Dentofacial Discrepancy using three-dimensional Analysis

Objectives: Dentofacial morphology of Class III malocclusion may display a midfacialdiscrepancy which requires multidirectional correction. The vomer bone as a centralstrut of midface complex has a role in sustaining a balanced stomatognathic system. That craniofacial interrelation was obtained from two (2D) or three dimensional (3D)analysis of cephalometric images in the identification still remains unclear. This studywas designed to clarify dimensional changes and pattern variations of the vomerbone in a different dentofacial discrepancy. Methods: Anatomical landmarks examinations were performed on 96 patient’s cone– beam computed tomography (CBCT) image to determine vomer bone outline ofTurkish adult patients. The vomeral outline determination was done by using croppingtools of the software algorithm. The vomer bone components within midface wereidentified, connected and linear references were taken horizontally between anteriormaxilla base plane and vomer base plane. The vomeral components were spliced, measured, and reconstructed in a three-dimensional model using MIMICS 19.0version (Mimics®, Materialize, Leuven, Belgium) software. The vomer bone patternwas classified into 3 main type groups that were statistically analyzed among studygroups respectively. Results: A high significant with a positive correlation of the different vomeralcomponents and three pattern model with different dentofacial profiles were found. Also, the vomer bone variations were more severe in male than female (p<0.01).No statistically significant between the vomeral components of cases and mean age(p>0.05) were determined. Conclusion: The results of this study provide fine details of surgical anatomyknowledge of the vomer bone pattern that can be used as a valuable reference forOrthodontic and Orthognathic procedures.
