Relationships between the semen parameters and the antioxidant system in idiopathic infertile patients

Objectives: Although it has been addressed that the decreases in levels of various antioxidant system components such as selenium, reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) play a role in idiopathic infertility, there is not any report concerning altogether evaluation of these components in same study. The aim of the present study was to determine seminal plasma levels of selenium and GSH, activities of CAT and SOD and sperm parameters in men with idiopathic infertile compared with fertile males, and to evaluate the relationships among these parameters. Methods: Twenty-eight men with idiopathic infertility and 30 healthy fertile men were recruited to this study. Semen analysis (sperm count, motility, morphology) was performed according to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to obtain sperm concentration, motility, and morphology. Activities of SOD and CAT and GSH levels in seminal plasma were measured by biochemical methods. Selenium levels in seminal plasma were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results: The sperm count in the idiopathic infertile male group were found lower than those in fertile male group (p
