Yöntem: Çalışmaya ait literatür verileri, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi ve Trakya Üniversitesi kütüphane veri tabanları ve Google Scholar arama motorlarında; “Obesity and Mental Disorders’’, “Exercise Participation and Mental Disorders’’ ve “Obesity and Exercise Participation anahtar kelimeleri aratılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir.

EVALUATION OF THE EXERCISE PARTICIPATION STATUS OF OBESE INDIVIDUALS WITH MENTAL DISORDERS

Purpose: Mental Disorders have become one of the most concerning issues of today. Drug therapies, one of treatment methods conducted on mental disorders contribute to weight gain and as a result of this these type of treatments may expose these individuals to obesity. However, either physically or mentally, these individuals don’t seem to participate sufficiently in physical activity. In this review, exercise participations of obese individuals having mental disorders will be assessed in consideration of literature data, and causes posing an obstacle for physical activity participation, factors motivating these individuals for physical activity were discussed. Method: Literature data were obtained from the library database of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Trakya University and Google Scholar using ‘’Obesity and Mental Disorders’’, Exercise participation and Mental Disorders’’ and ‘’Obesity and Exercise Participation’’ keywords. Results: As a result of this review, obese individuals with mental disorders were observed to refrain from physical activity because of stigmatization and safety problems during physical activity. Conclusion: it can be suggested that planning  intervention programs for these individuals by sports psychologists, psychiatrists and sports experts which may fulfill social, mental and physical needs, may have benefits on both physical and mental improvements and reintegrate them into society.
