Can Domestıc Vıolence Be Adressed By The Employment/Labour Law Mechanısms

Domestic violence is very common. Surveys made in some Western countries indicate that intimate partner violence has adverse consequences in the workplace. It affects the victim's working life. The abuser who perpetrates domestic violence can also disrupt his partner's workplace. Now that domestic violence is acknowledged to be a public sphere problem as a result of feminist analysis I discuss whether employers and trade unions should specifically address the problem. In my opinion since employers have a duty to safeguard their employees and have to provide gender equality in the workplace they should have a policy against partner violence and should address the problem in the personal and collective employment contracts and workplace regulations. Trade Unions need to take preventative measures. Employer awareness of domestic violence should be raised. Employees and trade-unions need to become alert to signs of domestic violence within the work force. There is a need for targeted legislation and other preventive measures
