Multiple Cannulated Screws in the Treatment of Femoral Neck Fractures

We assessed the outcomes of forty-three patients with femoral neck fractures who were treated with multiple cannulated screws between September 2003 and September 2011. The mean age was 44,71 and there were 24 male and 19 female patients. Distribution of fractures to Garden classification: 4 patients type 1, 13 type 2, 15 type 3 and 11 type 4 and to Pauwell classification: 10 patients type 1, 14 type 2, 19 type 3 . The mean time between the injury and the operation was 2,1 days. 42 patients with femoral neck fractures were fixed with 3 parallel cannulated screws and 1 with four screws. 2 patients were operated on via the lateral approach and open reduction -internal fixation, on the other hand 41 patients were treated by closed reduction and internal fixation. Mean follow-up was 42 months. The outcome was excellent in 25 patients, good in 6, fair in 2 and poor in 8. Non-union of the fracture developed in 4 patients and avascular necrosis of the femoral head in 4 patients. We conclude that the treatment of femoral neck fractures with multiple cannulated screws in appropriate indications is satisfactory and reliable.
