Son senelerde demir ve çelik istihsalinde Önemii gelişme-; 1er kaydedilmiştir. Bilhassa hava ile birlikte saf oksijen kullanılması, kok kalitesinin İslahı, toz cevherlerin eritici İle beraber briket haiîne getirildikten sonra fırına şarjı, koka İlâveten, fırına kok gazı, tabiî gaz veya fuel oil enjekte edilmesi, yüksek fırın kapasitesinde ehemmiyetli artışlar sağlamıştır. Ayrıca, çelik istihsalinde de hava yerine saf oksijen kullanılması gerek konverter tipi fırınlarda ve gerekse Sİemens-Martin fırınlarında büyük kapasite artışı temin etmiştir. Yukarda saydığımız İslâhatlar neticesinde ham demir (pik) ve çelik İstihsal maliyetlerinde de esaslı azalmalar vukuu aşikârdır.

During the last few years, there has been important new deveiopments in the production of pig iron and steel. Especially, the use of pure oxygen in addition to air, improvements in the quality of coke, charging of fine ores to the furnace.after petletizing them with the flux, in addition to coke, the injection of coke oven gas, natural gas, or fuel oil to the furnace, have been the cause of great increases in the capacities of blast furnaces. The use of pure oxygen, instead of natural sir, has also increased the capacities of either converters or open-Hearth furnaces. Because of the developments enumerated above, there has been important lowerings in the production costs of pig iron and steel.
