Canlı türleri ve fiziksel çevre arasındaki ekolojik ilişkiler ekosistemleri meydana getirmektedir. İnsan hayatının devamı da ancak bu ekosistemlere bağlı olarak gerçekleşebilmektedir. Her gün ortalama 100 canlı türünün yok olduğu öne sürülmektedir. Bu oran 2 normal kabul edilenden 1000 kat daha fazladır. Canlı türlerinin bir başka ifadeyle biyolojik çeşitliliğin yok olması tehlike boyutlarına ulaşmış ve küresel bir problem haline gelmiştir. İnsanoğlu kendi karanlığının rengini hazırlamaktadır.
