Character Education and Character Education Programs

In this study, it is aimed to make a compilation for the "character and value education" course taken as an elective or compulsory course within the scope of the renewed undergraduate programs of education faculties. In this context, it is tried to explain what the character education is, and how it should be first. Later, the components of a character education program, objectives, content, learning experiences, and evaluation approaches were examined in detail. Accordingly, character education can be defined as guiding exercises for students to give a strong moral basis to their behavior and to create behavioral forms for their moral values in order to make the society a better place. Character education should be penetrated into all academic, artistic and sportive activities in the school with an interdisciplinary approach. Through character education programs, it is aimed to ensure that students know “good”, feel “good” and realize “good”. There are different opinions about what the content of character education should be, what learning experiences are provided, and what assessment approaches are used within the context of character education. In conclusion, it is thought that this study may be a theoretical reference resource for faculty members, teachers and prospective teachers.
