Modification of Poplar Wood (Populus euramerican I-214) Fibers with Succinic Anhydride: Ist Determination of Optimum Esterification Parameters
In this study, fibers obtained from poplar wood (Populus euramericana I-214) were modified with succinicanhydride to improve the properties of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). To determine the optimummodification parameters fibers were modified in different reaction temperatures (100, 120, 140 Co), reaction time(30, 60, 90,120,150,180min.) and succinic anhydride ratio (25% and 50% based on weight of oven dry fibers). Inorder to determine the optimum esterification conditions among the 36 variations weight percent gain, acidvalue, saponification value, monoester, diester and total ester content of esterified fibers were determined. Also, water repellent values were investigated. When the data were taken into account the optimal conditions forsuccinic anhydride were defined as following: anhydride ratio 50% (based on weight of oven-dried fiber),reaction temperature 120 Co and reaction time 90 min.
