Resveratrol Attenuates Both Small Bowel and Liver Changes in Obstructive Jaundice
Background:It is wellknown thatmucosal changes andalterationsin liverfunction occur in theexperimental obstructive jaundice model.Aims:Weaimed to evaluate theeffect ofresveratrol onobstructive jaundice-induced changes in thesmall bowel mucosa andliverusing ischaemia-modified albumin as a marker of oxidative damage. Study Design: Animal experimentation. Methods:Thestudy useda rodent experimental model of obstructive jaundice, including a sham group (1),a control group (2),anda study group (3).Wistar albino ratswere used. Jaundice wasproduced by ligation ofthebileductinGroups 2 and3. InGroup 3, resveratrol was administered intraperitoneally for 14 days. Results:Interms ofthestructure andthesizeofthemucosal villi, significant thickening andblunting were detected inGroup 2 com-pared withGroup 1. These changes weresignificantly lessnoticeable inGroup 3 compared withGroup 2.Levels ofischaemia-modified albumin weresignificantly higher in Group 2 compared withthose in Group 1, andtheyweresignificantly decreased in Group 3 compared with Group 2. Conclusion:Resveratrol administration to obstructive jaundiced rats reduced theorganic effects ofobstructive jaundice onsmall bowel mucosa andliver oxidative stress. Webelieve thatthisreduction might attenuate bacterial translocation andsystemic effects ofse-creted cytokines.
