Mechanization practices in the harvest and post-harvest stages in walnut growing
The labour costs constitute 30-60% of the total production costs in the hand harvest of walnut. The walnut fruit has a hardly shell which protects the kernel from mechanical damage and contamination; hence it is suitable to mechanical harvest. Quality losses in terms of fruit browning, heat injury, getting wormy and moulding may occur in walnut fruits if they are left on the ground for a long time after being dropped by shaking. For this reason, the dropped fruits should be removed and the kernels should be dried. In this study, examples in the foreign countries related to the mechanization practices in harvest which is of great importance in the fruit quality of walnut and which requires the most intensive and tiresome work and post-harvest mechanization are given. Mechanization of harvest, shell removed and drying widely applied in the developed countries were explained.
