The effects of education on parental smoking behaviour of asthmatic children

Passive smoke exposure is well known to increase the symptoms and frequency of exacerbations in asthmatic children. This study was carried out for determining the parental smoking rates of asthmatic children and establishing the role of standardised education on their smoking behaviour. 296 Asthmatic children and their parents were recruited into the study between 1996 and 1997. A questionnaire form was applied to parents on their smoking habits. At the end of the one-year period, the effect of standardised education was assessed with a repeated questionnaire. Passive smoke exposure was reported to be 64.5 % and 38.1 % was smoking in the same room with the asthmatic child. Passive smoke exposure was significantly decreased to 50.3 % ( p
