Yunanistan’ın Anadolu İşgali ve Sonrasında Anglikan Kilisesi ile İstanbul Rum Ortodoks Patrikhanesi Arasındaki İlişkiler (1919-1923)
Avrupa’daki reform hareketleri sonrası ortaya çıkan Anglikan Kilisesi’nin inanç olarak Ortodoks Kilisesi ile yakın olduğu görüşü uzun dönem her iki kilise mensuplarınca dile getirilmişti. Tarihî süreçte, benzer inanışlara sahip olan bu iki kilisenin birçok konuda ortak hareket edebileceklerine dair öneriler sürekli gündemde olmuş ancak bu hususta net ve somut adımlar atılamamıştı. Kiliseler arası birliktelik arayışı dinî gerekçelerle gündeme gelse de arka planda siyasi hedefler de bulunmaktaydı. İngiltere’nin artan siyasi ve ekonomik gücü çerçevesinde farklı bölgelerde otoritesini sürdürme çabalarında, Anglikan Kilisesi’nin Ortodoks Kilisesi ile olan bu yakınlığı kullanılmaya çalışılacaktı. İngiltere’den destek beklentisinde olan Ortodokslar da benzer yaklaşımlar sergileyeceklerdi. Ortodoks dünyası içinden bu konuda en net adım, mütareke döneminde patrik olan Meletios Metaksakis tarafından atılacaktı. Yunan ordusunun Anadolu’dan çekilmeye başladığı tarihlerde – 1922 yılı Temmuz ayında – kendisi ve Patrikhane Sinodu adına bir deklerasyon yayımlayarak Anglikan öğretilerinin doğruluğunu kabul ettiklerini ilân eden Meletios, İngiltere’nin desteğiyle Yunanlıların Anadolu’daki kazanımlarını korumayı hedefliyordu. Fakat süreç onun hedeflediğinin tersi şekilde ilerleyecekti.
Relations between the Church of England and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul During and After the Greek Occupation of Anatolia (1919-1923)
The view that the Anglican Church, which emerged after the reform movements in Europe which also was close to the Orthodox Church as a belief, was expressed by both church members for a long time. Suggestions that these two churches with similar beliefs can act jointly in many subjects have always been on the agenda, but no clear and concrete steps have been taken on the subject. Although the search for unity between churches came through religious reasons, there were also political targets in the background. In an effort to maintain England’s authority in different regions within the framework of its increasing political and economic power, the closeness to the Orthodox Church of the Anglican Church will be used. The Orthodox, who were expecting support from the UK, showed similar approaches. From the Orthodox world, the clearest step in this regard was to be taken by Meletios Metaxakis, who was patriarch during the period of armistice. Meletios, who proclaimed the recognition of the Anglican orders by publishing a declaration in the name of Patriarchate Synod and himself in July 1922 when the Greek army began to withdraw from Anatolia, aimed to protect the gains of the Greeks in Anatolia with the support of Great Britain. However, the process developed in the opposite direction.
