The effects of different NaCI concentrations on germination and seedling growth of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes
Plant growth and yield of dry beans, which are grown in irrigated fields, are negatively affected by salt problem. This study was conducted in order to test germination and seedling growth of phaseolus bean genotypes in laboratory at two stages in 1996 and 1997. At the first stage seeds of 95 genotypes produced in 1995 and 1996 growth season were tested for germination at NaCl concentrations of 0.0, -0.9 and -1.5 MPa at 25 ± 0.5 °C in three replicates. At the second stage seedling emergence and growth were investigated of 5 tolerant, 4 mediocre and 2 susceptible genotypes selected in the germination test at NaCl concentrations of 0.0, -0.6, -0.9 and -1.5 MPa at 25 ± 0.5 °C. Germination and seedling growth decreased as salt concentrations increased. However, variation was present among 95 genotypes tested, with promising results from 460,521 and 421.
