Histophysiological importance of Metallothioneins

Metallothioneins (MTs) are are a family of small (61 amino acids), cysteine-rich (20 residues) low-molecular-weight (6000–7000 Da) intracellular proteins. The MT proteins can be bound metal ions such as zinc, copper, cadmium, mercury, and lead. They are found in normal tissues such as myoepithelial cells, germinative cells, thymulin-containing thymic epithelial cells, Sertoli cells, epithelial cells of bowel, and parenchymal cells of liver, pancreas, kidney, and lung. Significant of the MTs are roles in heavy-metal homeostasis, detoxification, and transport such as Zn, Cu, Hg, Pb and Cd. Moreover, MTs are associated both cell proliferation and cell death such as necrosis and apopitosis
