Öz Osmanlı Tarihinin meşhur komutanlanndan olan Gazi OsmanPaşa, 1833'te Tokafta doğmuş ve 5 Nisan 1900'de İstanbul'davefat etmiştir. İlk defa 1853-1856 Osmanlı- Rus Harbinde subayolarak katılan Osman Bey, memleketin birçok yerinde çeşitligörevlerde bulunmuş, 1877-78 Harbi'nde Ruslara karşı Plevne'dekazandığı zaferlerle tarihe geçmiştir. Yerli- yabancı subay vegazetecilerin üzerinde hemfikir oldukları nokta, Onun sadecedeğerli bir komutan olmak değil, insani vasıflarla da dünyanıntakdirini kazanmış olmasıdır. Nitekim Plevne'deki başanları ileharp tarihinde yeni bir sayfa açan Paşa, güzel ve adaletli idaresi ileorduda ve Plevne'deki müslim ve gayrimUslim halk arasındabüyük bir itibar kazanmıştır. Esaretinde bile devletinin onur veşerefini en kutsal değerler olarak korumaya çalışmış, bu haliyle deRus Çarı ve yüksek kademeli komutanların takdirini kazanmıştır.Üstün hizmetleri ülkede ve Padişah II. Abdülhamid nezdinde debüyük mernnuniyete vesile olduğundan "Gazi"lik ünvanı yanındabirçok değerli nişanlar verilmek suretiyle mükafatlandırılmıştır. ABSTRACTOne of the famous commanders of the Attornan History, GaziOsman Pasha was bom in Tokat in 1833 and died in Istanbul on 5Apri1 1900. Taking place in the Ottoman-Russian Battle in 18531856for the first time, Osman Bey was charged with a number ofduties in the various parts of the country and became a name ofhistoric significance upon the victories he won in Plevne againstthe Russian armies in 1877-1878 wars. What the natiye and foreignhistorians and the commanders and joumalists who personally tookplace in the war agree about is that Osman Bey is noted not only asa great commander but also as a humanitarian person. In additionto his epoch-making achievements in Plevne, he gained the respectand love of the MusJims and Non-Muslims thanks to his just andadmirable ru1e. Even when he strugg1ed to protect the honour andname of the state as the most sacred va1ues, which broughtpopularity and respectability among the Russian Tsar andcommanders. He was granted the title of "GaZI"' an account of hisinvaluable services to the Attornan Empire; Abdülhamid Ilaısohonoured him with a number oftitles.
